Learning to Unschool

We feel the need to have our 7th grade student heal from the various types of stress and trauma she experienced at her magnet public school, where she had been enrolled since the 4th grade. She has endured some trauma, neglect and shaming, at the school and has had ongoing strep and ear infection that caused her to miss a lot of school.  We decided the best thing we could do was to homeschool her.  Presently, we are giving her the opportunity to relax from the pressure her absences has caused.  Her physical and emotional health have been compromised for several years, so we are tending to those aspects, while creating a safe environment for her to explore her interests.  Right now we are emphasizing self-care.
That has included repotting the bamboo plant and and sharing a graphic novel, Page by Paige by Laura Lee Gulledge.
I
I've taken several books out of the library on the subject of homeschooling and have been searching the many wonderful websites, many written by parents just like us, taking education from the institution and moving it to the home and the shared world beyond.  This is truly going to be a collaborative experience.
